Vijay’s U-Turn? Tamil Nadu CM’s Amit Shah Meeting Sparks Delimitation Row

Chennai | August 21, 2026

Has Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay softened his stand on delimitation after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah? The question has triggered a major political debate in the state.

Vijay met Amit Shah on August 20 ahead of the Southern Zonal Council meeting. During the meeting, he raised concerns over delimitation and called for a clear legislative assurance that no state should lose its share of parliamentary representation because of successful population control.

The controversy began because Vijay’s latest position appeared different from the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution he moved on August 12. That resolution called for the Lok Sabha’s strength to be permanently retained at 543 seats and for the existing state-wise distribution of seats to remain unchanged. In his latest remarks, however, Vijay focused on protecting Tamil Nadu’s percentage share of representation rather than demanding a permanent freeze.

The DMK and AIADMK have accused the Chief Minister of taking a “U-turn,” while the issue also sparked a heated debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday. TVK, however, maintains that Tamil Nadu’s political representation must be protected.

The big question now is whether this is a genuine softening of Vijay’s position or simply a strategic shift—from opposing delimitation outright to demanding safeguards for Tamil Nadu if the exercise goes ahead.
